MOVIE REVIEW - THE LUNCHBOX

MOVIE REVIEW - THE LUNCHBOX (2013)

Today I went to see a movie which was an Indian film in Hindi and some English called The Lunchbox or originally called "Dabba". I have some Indian friends and have a small insight into Indian culture and understanding of what a lunchbox is, however this movie really introduced me to a lot more depth of the day to day of an average Indian worker and the role of male ad females in 2 different households in India.

It started of very funny although very slowly and most certainly looked promising especially with the wonderful comedic character of "Aunty". However as the movie progressed I felt myself starting to doze off which for me is always a sign of "this movie is not so great and I'm kidding myself by hanging around". But as one does, you hang around as often with movies such as these there can be a wonderful unexpected twist of message at the end of the film.

All of a sudden the screen went black and the credits started to role up and I couldn't believe it had just finished. As I wheeled away trying to beat the oldies to the disabled toilets (as there was a big group of them and 1 toilet) I started to think about the film. Nothing popped into my head at all. I got the gist of the movie but somewhere it was lost for me.

What I can say is that I thoroughly enjoyed the comedic moments throughout the film. The amazing insight into daily living in the (what I presume) to be middle to perhaps lower class living in India. As mentioned before the roles of some of the men and women and the wonderful insight into a very different culture to mine.

The acting was superb.

I wheeled away always wishing that I had travelled to India whilst I was walking as it is a country that deeply fascinates me now that I am in my late 40's. Sadly it never appealed to me in my 20's or 30's. On a positive note, I have a great opportunity to be able to experience it through the richness and accessibility of movies here in Melbourne, Australia.

Would I recommend this movie? Sure I would for all the reasons listed above. I always say that each and everyone of us sees movies in so many different ways depending on our life experiences, the mood we are in that day and our perspective on things that one should never read a review nor be influenced by it, and to have an open mind if it's up your alley. Enjoy if you do choose to see it and let me know what you think.

"Official IMBD summary

A mistaken delivery in Mumbai's famously efficient lunchbox delivery system connects a young housewife to an older man in the dusk of his life as they build a fantasy world together through notes in the lunchbox.
